Cytodiagnosis of Pleural Effusions

چکیده
THERE are several varieties of pleural effusion where an examination of the cells in the fluid is as a rule unnecessary. These are the various forms of purulent effusion or empyema. Pus is pus all the world over, and its main scientific interest is not to be found in the cells which it contains, but in the organisms which cause its production and are to be found in it. It makes a great deal of difference to a patient's chances whether an empyema is due to the pneumococcus, streptococcus, staphylococcus, to the bursting of a tubercular cavity with a mixed infection of the pleura, to the bacillus typhosus, the bacillus coli and so on, but in almost all cases of empyema it is the organism which should be sought microscopically or by culture, while the exact look of the cells in the effusion is a matter of secondary importance. It is in serous effusions that the cells are of importance, and the history of this question is of considerable interest. Pleurisy is one of the most common of acute chest affections, and for many years it has been matter of discussion whether

Pleural fluid cytology in suspected malignant effusions with special emphasis on cell block preparation
Background: Cytlogical examinations of serous effusions have been well accepted and a positive diagnosis often considered as definitive diagnosis. It helps for staging and prognosis of the patients for malignancy. Accurately diagnosing cells as being either malignant or benign reactive mesothelial cells in serous effusions is a common diagnostic problem in conventional cytological smears (CS). ...
متن کاملCytodiagnosis of rheumatoid pleural effusions.
The stained smears of the deposits from one pericardial and 19 pleural effusions complicating rheumatoid arthritis were examined. On the basis of clinical and biochemical evidence it was considered that in six cases the effusions were due to the rheumatoid disease while in a further nine cases the association was considered likely. In the remaining five cases the association was considered to b...
متن کاملCytological Analysis of Body Fluids in Conventional Smear and Cell Block Technique-study of 120 Cases
The cytological study of body fluids is an important diagnostic modality. It helps in finding out the etiology as well as the prognosis of the disease process. In our study, a total of 120 fluid samples were examined for conventional cytological smear and cellblock method. Out of 120 fluids, 58 were peritoneal fluid, 55 were pleural fluid, 4 were synovial and 3 pericardial fluid. Overall morpho...

Background & Aim: Adenosine deminase(ADA) can be used in the diagnosis of tuberculous pleural effusions. In countries with high prevalence of tuberculous pleural effusions, specificity and sensitivity for ADA test is high, therefore it is an integral part of a diagnostic workup of lymphocyte-rich exudative body fluids, and it is a cheap and economically cost-effective test. No study has bee...
متن کاملTh1 and Th2 Cytokine Profiles in Malignant Pleural Effusion
Background: The alteration of Th1 and Th2 cytokine levels is the subject of controversy in pleural effusions caused by malignancy, a situation that favors a Th2 immune response. Objective: To examine the different levels of IL-4 and IL-10 (Th2 cytokines), and IL-2 and interferon-γ (IFN-γ) (Th1 cytokines) in malignant and non-malignant pleural effusions. Method: The cytokine levels in pleural fl...
